Youth Education and Health in Soulard

A Non-Profit Community Organization

Youth Education and Health in Soulard (YEHS), a nonprofit community-based 501(c) (3) corporation, was founded in 1972 to reduce the area's large school dropout rate through the development of community services and program.  To  accomplish this YEHS first launched a free breakfast program for school children, as well as a variety of youth education, tutoring, job training, employment, health, arts and crafts and recreation programs. Saving the historic Soulard neighborhood while preventing the displacement of its long- term residents also drove the organization's agenda. Over the next 35 years, YEHS developed other programs to serve the education, housing, employment and health care needs of low and moderate-income residents throughout the City of St. Louis as well as the immediate Soulard neighborhood. YEHS's major programs included:

Housing and commercial development, management of affordable rental housing and commercial spaces in the Soulard, Bohemian Hill, and Mckinley Heights St. Louis neighborhoods, currently consists of 151 units. 55 homeowners and rental properties have been developed in conjunction with YouthBuild St. Louis's construction training program in partnership with Red Brick Community Land Trust.

YouthBuild St Louis AmeriCorps (YBSLA), an alternative education, construction training, employment and career development program has served over 629 low-income St. Louis youths, ages 18-24. 87% completed YBSLA and are working and/or attending post-secondary training or college. YEHS continues to offer graduate placement services and employs graduates in its housing construction program.

YEHS provides micro-enterprise business development assistance, homebuyer/home ownership opportunites and counseling, and financial fitness training for YouthBuild graduates, YEHS tenants and others of low and moderate-income.

THe Soulard Senior Center served over 200 adults daily with meals, tranportation, social services, and group activities for 25 years and served more than one million years. YEHS continues to sponsor a Saturday senior citizens home-delivered meals program run by community.
